When I joined this corporate world in June'06 I was super excited. I was so self motivated that I did any and every work that came my way....and that too without any expectations!! People around me did took un-due advantage of this and gave me thr share of work as well..but I never realised....I mean I thot its my work and have to do it. My story is not unique, most freshers do come with this attitude.
But over years...why does it get washed away? Why does the enthusiasm ends? After few initial years we start getting into questions like - why do i work? what will I get? Why am I only asked everytime to do extra work?
Few probable reasons can be :
- The world is different from our imagination. We see all sorts of harsh corporate truths around - favor ism, biased bosses, no growth ( despite of hard work) , chamchas , etc. All these things kill the freshness/ motivation in an individual.
- Over the years people feel they are not getting right share of thr contribution- either in monetary terms or higher/better position/ opportunity
- People get content with whatever they have . The drive to achieve gets missing.
- People just want to project themselves as a " top Performer" initially to make a place for them , and once they get this they get to thr normal self.
I have thought of few things that can help in retaining the motivation :
- Always look at people lower than your level - ths is not a very good approach for Long Term growth . But by looking a your juniors you feel better in comparative sense
- Talk to people who like the role you are doing or who are interested in your area. This will make you feel good about your work
- For Females ( Wear new clothes to office - that in itself is a very big motivator to be in office )
That's all I can think of right now. Unfortunately for bosses and other corporate stuff i cudn't think of a solution.
Happy Working Friends- lets go on !!
Lets listen to the music life plays for us..every day...every moment...lets enjoi and cherish every sound of life...

Exploration have turned into Exploitation ...
But we wont give up that easily ....Will fight till the End .
It also reminds me of the speech given by Steve Jobs during Stanford Convocation .
"Death is the Final Destination which we all share together "
and when it is certain , then Why
fear ....fight till the last Breath .
One of the most important reasons why I started thinking about what am I doing with my life and where is my work taking me, is the fact that I now know about the world than I knew before and that also makes me pick things that I would like to do..
when one starts working the planning cabability and the vision increases... some of us don't exploit that fact some do... the ones that do, realise their paths and move forward and the ones who don't get stuck in the cycle of just coming to work finishing it and go back home...
of the things that can be motivating are
1. having something to look forward to every week every month... setting short term targets
2. finding something related or remotely related to your field of work and how you can bring yourself up-to-speed on that.. be it technology, delivery, research, communication, measurement whatever
3. collaborate and encourage...
4. share knowledge... within the organisation and/or start writing a blog about your work... socialize it and see how it grows...
and find a friend in the HR room who wears a white shirt and looks amazingly beautiful in it... make sure she drinks enough water and goes out with you for a coffee break :)
God Bless !!!
@Kamal- u r a fighter...m sure u will find a way and then will take session for new joinees :)
@Prashnat- True buddy...self analysis and having a vision is a MUST.
and btw I more than agree with the last point u mentioned :P hope u have one friend in HR room now as well !!
you know my only friend in the HR room :) she is beautiful !!! no HR rooms anymore for me now !
Very true and very nicely written..
I think one should try to enjoy whatever one is working and everything else would follow. Also one should leave all those work related worries behind once we step out of the office.
My take is different. If you enjoy the work you do,the everything else is secondary.
Have faith, its a race. Sometimes you are ahead, sometime your behind and in the end you realize you are competing with yourself.
